If you want to trade IRFC (Indian Railway Finance Corporation Limited) through FXCM, you cannot do it legally as an Indian resident. IRFC trades on the NSE under the ticker IRFC, and while FXCM offers shares as CFDs, offering these to Indian residents violates FEMA and SEBI rules.
IRFC is a large-cap infrastructure finance company that funds Indian Railways. It is popular with retail investors because of its low share price and government-linked railway theme. Exchange-traded shares on NSE are legal and straightforward. Trading CFDs on IRFC through an offshore broker like FXCM is a different story.
The legal reality
FXCM serves Indian residents through its offshore entity, Stratos Global LLC, registered in SVG. This entity has no SEBI registration. For India, FXCM is an unregulated offshore broker. Offering OTC margin forex or CFDs to Indian residents is not permitted under FEMA and SEBI rules, and enforcement authorities act against facilitators. There is no fund segregation requirement and no negative-balance protection.
What IRFC is
IRFC is the dedicated financing arm of Indian Railways, raising funds from markets and lending them to the railway network. The stock trades on the NSE and is part of the Nifty Midcap 150 index.
Key facts for a beginner:
- Sector: Financial services and infrastructure finance
- Market cap: Large cap
- Dividends: Pays dividends, medium yield tier
- Volatility: High, especially around budget announcements
- Retail appeal: Low price point, government-linked theme, heavily discussed in trading communities
The stock is settled in INR on the NSE. You buy and sell actual shares. This is the legal route.
CFD trading on IRFC through FXCM
FXCM offers share CFDs as part of its instrument list. A CFD lets you speculate on price movements without owning the underlying share. You can go long or short, and you use leverage.
The RBI permits residents to trade only INR-based currency pairs and permitted derivative instruments on SEBI-recognised exchanges. Trading CFDs with offshore brokers is not permitted under FEMA rules. Remitting funds abroad for margin trading is not a permitted purpose under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS).
If you open an FXCM account from India and fund it with USD, you are operating outside the legal framework. Regulatory authorities can act against facilitators, and you have no local recourse. There is no compensation scheme and no fund segregation for the SVG entity.
FXCM account conditions at a glance
| Item | FXCM Condition |
|---|---|
| Account type | Single Standard account |
| Minimum deposit | USD 50 |
| Base currencies | USD, EUR, GBP |
| INR funding | Not available |
| Payment methods | Cards, international wire |
| Local INR rails | Not verified at review |
| Leverage | Up to 1:1000 default |
| Leverage above USD 5,000 | Reduced to up to 1:400 |
| Commission | None |
| Spreads | From ~0.8 pip on majors |
| Platforms | MT4, Trading Station, TradingView |
| MT5 | Not available |
| Islamic account | Yes |
At 1:1000 leverage, a 0.1 percent adverse move wipes out your entire margin. FXCM reduces leverage to 1:400 above USD 5,000 equity, but 1:400 is still extremely high for a beginner.
How IRFC trading differs on NSE
Trading IRFC legally requires a SEBI-registered broker and the NSE. The difference affects costs, leverage, and protection.
| Feature | NSE trading | FXCM CFD |
|---|---|---|
| Legal for residents | Yes | Not permitted under FEMA |
| Settlement currency | INR | USD, EUR, GBP |
| Leverage | Margin-based, ~20-30x on notional | Up to 1:1000 |
| Fund segregation | Required | Not required for SVG entity |
| Compensation scheme | Client protection through exchanges | None |
| KYC requirement | PAN card mandatory | Foreign broker KYC, not SEBI |
The margin on NSE currency derivatives is set by SEBI and exchanges, roughly 3-5 percent of notional value, about 20-30 times leverage. It is capped by exchange rules and settled in INR with no domestic FX conversion.
Trade-offs
FXCM has been around since 1999 and is connected to Stratos and Jefferies. The platform itself is mature, with MT4, Trading Station, and TradingView support.
For India, the trade-off is about legal status and protection. The offshore SVG entity is not subject to SEBI oversight. There is no fund segregation requirement. If the broker fails, there is no compensation scheme. The RBI publishes an Alert List of unauthorised forex trading platforms. As of the November 2025 update, it lists 95 entities, and the RBI states the list is not exhaustive. FXCM is not on that list at the time of review, but the broader warning applies to offshore CFD brokers.
On tax: residents must declare worldwide income and foreign assets. The 20 percent TCS on LRS remittances above Rs 10 lakh per financial year applies, and remitting funds for margin forex trading is not a permitted LRS end-use.
What we would do
For trading IRFC specifically, the NSE is the only legal route. The stock is available on NSE, settled in INR, and subject to Indian market regulation.
Suitable for traders who:
- Live in India and want to trade IRFC legally through the NSE
- Prefer INR settlement and SEBI-regulated brokers
- Want to avoid the complexity and legal risk of offshore CFDs
Not suitable for traders who:
- Expect to use 1:1000 leverage on IRFC price moves
- Want to short IRFC without the constraints of the NSE derivatives market
- Prefer USD-denominated accounts and international platforms
How to start trading IRFC legally
The process for trading IRFC on the NSE requires a PAN card, which is mandatory, plus Aadhaar, an address proof, and bank proof. Approval usually takes 24-48 hours.
Steps:
- Choose a SEBI-registered broker with NSE access
- Complete KYC with PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, and bank details
- Fund your account in INR through UPI, IMPS, NEFT, or net banking
- Search for IRFC on the NSE and place your order
- Monitor margin requirements if you trade derivatives
UPI through PhonePe or Google Pay is near-instant and works 24/7, with a limit of roughly Rs 1 lakh per transaction. IMPS takes minutes. NEFT and RTGS work for larger amounts.
Can I trade IRFC CFDs with FXCM from India?
FXCM offers share CFDs, but the offshore entity serving Indian residents has no SEBI registration. Offering OTC margin forex and CFDs to Indian residents is not permitted under FEMA and SEBI rules. Trading IRFC CFDs through FXCM from India falls outside the legal framework.
Is IRFC a good stock for beginners?
IRFC is a government-linked infrastructure finance company with a low share price, which makes it popular with retail investors. It has high volatility and pays dividends. The stock is easy to access through any SEBI-registered broker on the NSE. The legal channel is the key consideration.
How is CFD trading taxed in India?
Cryptocurrency is taxed at a flat 30 percent plus 4 percent cess. Exchange-traded currency futures and options profits are generally treated as non-speculative business income and taxed at slab rates. Intraday speculative positions are treated as speculative business income with different loss carry-forward rules. Residents must declare worldwide income and foreign assets.
